25 tracks that inspired me to make music. Whether it was a song that introduced me to a genre/artist, or a tune that made me go “how’d they do that??” each selection here holds a special place in my mind. Without these artists, who knows what sort of music I’d be making…
There are very few things I could care less about than what DAW you think is superior to the rest.
I equate this to entering an art store to argue over which paint brush will paint you a better painting: If you can’t paint, there’s not a brush that an art store can sell you to make you paint like Renoir. The same is true for any tool used to make art, be it software or whatever. A tool in the hands of an artist becomes great because of the artist, and never the other way around.
People who take the time out of their day to make statements about DAW “X” being better than DAW “Y” are simply attempting to justify their own choice, their money spent, and their own investment to learn/use that choice. Usually this argument will include something about how their favorite producer uses the same, and that MUST make it superior.
Yet the rebuttal to that is counting the numerous artists who’ve championed rudimentary software to make their art: “I hear Burial uses only Audacity” or “Liam Howlett used mainly Reason to make Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned”…
But honestly, who cares either way? Neither matter when it comes to bringing your own artistic vision to life.
Stop focusing on the idea that using any specific piece of gear is going to warrant you vastly superior, amazing, life changing inspiration that will finally yield you some timeless creative output… Because it won’t. That my friend lies within you, and your creativity. Something you have to nurture and practice at.
There are no shortcuts to cultivating creativity, nor learning a craft or skill like music production. Invest in yourself and stick with whatever tools speak to you. Life’s not perfect and we all know software, let alone DAW’s, aren’t either. Attempting to find the perfect solution to creating art, or that perfect moment to be creative, etc. is a fruitless endeavor.
Stop comparing your artistic journey to those who’ve come before you, or are working along side you. The beauty of being an artist is being capable with yourself above all other things. ‘Nuff said.
